Airbag filling systems

Airbags are inflated with gas generators. The most commonly used gas generators today consist of a cartridge filled with gas. This is sealed with a metal membrane. In case of an accident, the membrane is destroyed by a small explosive charge and the cold gas flows into the bag. The gas cartridges are filled with a helium-argon gas mixture with a pressure of 500 to 1,000 bar. In various applications, an oxygen content of about 20 percent is added to the gas. All well-known manufacturers of airbag systems use HOFER diaphragm compressors, mostly in 3-stage design, for filling the gas cartridges. Special attention must be paid to the gas mixture with oxygen content. At a compression pressure of 1,000 bar and an oxygen content of 20%, the oxygen partial pressure is 200 bar. Hence, the compressors are designed as oxygen compressors.
